OUGD405 STUDIO BRIEF 1 - LUNGS ILLUSTRATION RESEARCH

After my interim critique, I chose to develop the deforestation idea, going down the route of the lungs made out of trees route. I thought the next step was to research existing illustrations of lungs made out of trees that are of a similar concept to my initial photograph I found. This is what I found.

Initial photograph.

This is a very precise image of lungs made out of trees, which looks as though it's a vector based image made on Illustrator. I like how on one half the lungs are all healthy and green with leaves, and on the other half is just dead looking stalks. This shows how we are slowly killing off our trees, and slowly killing ourselves as well.
This is a very similar image to the one above, only is more decorative with flowers and a gradient on the trunk parts. I think this looks more childlike due to this.

I really like this design, again another what appears to be vector based image. There are only 2 different colours used and I like the contemporary, simplistic effect this creates. Here the outline of the lungs has also been shown, to make it look more lung-like, as the branches and leaves part doesn't cover as much ground as the previous images, so there is more need for the outline.

This image looks more like a mosaic than an illustration, although the same idea of half dead half alive has been applied, which I think is a very effective idea. I don't think I will use the mosaic effect in my work however, as it looks too much like finger painting, or mosaics, which isn't the effect I am aiming for.

This is a much more illustrative style than all of my previous images, and I think it works really well. I like how parts of it look like they've been printed on using a stamp as well, this gives it more of an inky appearance, rather than digital. Although this image is black and white, the little flowery details make this image look like a healthy pair of lungs, rather than lungs that are dying, which you would think they were just by their colour. I must think about the design of my lungs when creating them, and what effect I want to create.
This is a lot more unusual illustration, which is very shocking. On one side is a lung which is all healthy, with blue sky in the background and birds flying. This side of the lung goes partially off the page though so that the other lung, the dying lung with green gooey water spurting out of it, and the branches dead with green gunk on them, is exposed. This looks like something that would appear in the Horrid Henry children's books, although is very powerful, yet colourful, and you don't immediately see what's going on until you look a little more carefully and assess the situation.
This is another unusual image of lungs, as it is photographic rather than being digitally produced. I like the use of oranges to create the lungs, and the use of illustration to create the trachea and the left and right main bronchus stems. I could perhaps produce this same idea using broccoli.

This is a really interesting and clever photograph, which may or may not have been altered in Photoshop. I like how part of the tree's have been removed from one side of the lungs, which gives the impression that by cutting down the rainforests, we are killing ourselves. This may however be pretty tricky to produce myself, as to get a photograph of forests that look like the shape of lungs would be pretty tricky.

This is a similar idea to the photograph previously, only this part of a forest has been taken from it's photograph and put onto a white background, to give the shape of the lungs more impact. I like how the river makes the trachea of the lungs, and also the main stems of bronchus as well. This has definitely been adjusted in Photoshop and isn't just an ordinary photograph, and I think this gives it a very graphics-y appearance which is kind of funky.

This is very simple yet effective image, that is the same basic idea that all of the previous images are showing. Instead of a tree from above, or just branches forming the lungs, an actual photographs of two trees from the side view make up the lungs. This makes them appear a lot more like trees in the perspective we as humans see them, and therefore makes the message more real.

I am going to take into consideration all of this research, and all the different ways of creating lungs out of trees, and experiment with them, using different objects to make the trees, as previously mentioned. My next step is going to be to photograph different items that I can use to make my tree with, then start drawing out the basic shape of lungs to position my items around, or to find a suitable photographs of a pair of lungs that I can use for my shape, which may be a more accurate way of creating my image.
