OUGD504 STUDIO BRIEF TWO - LINGERIE BRANDING RESEARCH

After my feedback and looking back at my designs, I thought the script typeface and hand drawn style I had used was similar in style to some lingerie brands that I am familiar with. I went on to research into some of these brands, to see how they have produced their logo. This link with lingerie brands will also hint at Charlotte Shane's connection to the sex industry, as underwear is a major part of that industry.

The Love Stories Intimates logo is a really similar concept to something I have been trying to achieve, showing two sides of something within the typography used in the logo. In my initial designs I have experimented with half LED half a regular serif typeface, and similarly in the Love Stories logo the initials logo uses a graffiti style "L" and a very sophisticated serif "S", with a comma either side as reference to the name of the brand, having something to do with writing. The lines either side finish of the logo, making it look like it has purpose by creating a definite finish. The logotype beneath the initial uses a similar concept, only uses the same typeface (or very similar), with "LOVE" is uppercase, and "Stories" in title case and italic, creating the same contrast as with the initials. With my designs the two parts seemed very much like two separate aspects, and didn't really work together that well, however in this logo, both the initials and the logotype, the two aspects fit together seamlessly, complimenting one another, and not being too initially visibly contrasting. What works with this logo is the simplicity of the contrasting elements. They have kept the colours the same so as to allow the design to to speak for itself, and not over complicate things. This is something I should try and achieve for my own logo.

Edge o' Beyond is another lingerie brand, and their logo is a lot simpler, a round cursive typeface that looks as if it has been hand drawn. The cross stroke of the "e" and the finial on the "d" have had swash's added onto them, acting as lines that are sometimes found on either side of a logo to finish it off. This not only makes the logotype look more like a logo, it also makes it look much more elegant, as if the letterforms are dancing or gliding into place. The "o'" being this light green shade also helps to break up the brand name, making you read it a lot more stilted, and putting more emphasis on the black lettering. Similarly to one or two of the typefaces I have experimented with this typeface has a continuous stroke weight, adding to it's simplicity and making it look a lot more like handwriting rather than a scripted typeface. It also makes it look a lot more modern and minimalist, rather than a bit dated.

Lonely Lingerie is an collection from the Lonely Hearts Label, based in New Zealand. This logo is similar to Alexa Chung's IT book name in that is looks very much like this is someones hand writing, only this is a lot simpler and heavier weighted, and is also much more stilted, as the letters stand on their own instead of being joined together and flowing, they stand as individuals. This may be a concept that the Lonely brand is trying to portray, and also reflects the name of the brand itself, lonely, meaning you are alone, and these letterforms are very much so apart form one another. Although lonely and being alone are two very different things, as lonely generally reflects sadness at being alone, whereas if you are alone you could be enjoying your own company very much so. The brand could be called lonely, as this is something that you would would want to buy when you are feeling lonely, to cheer you up and make you not alone anymore.

Hopeless Lingerie is another lingerie brand, only from Australia. This logo is very feminine, with it's ball terminal's on the "s"'s, and the lopping appearance of this scripted typeface. Unlike Lonely Lingerie, this logo is very much a typeface, and looks a lot more sophisticated because of this, even though Lonely Lingerie is in fact a much larger brand. The weighting is varied which makes it look a lot more sophisticated, and the close kerning of the letterforms accentuates the roundness of each letterform. This is a relatively simple scripted typeface, as it has only minimal flairs and has no serif's. This creates a more contemporary appearance, despite it being a script typeface, which then reflects on the brand and what kind of products it sells, which are definitely for the contemporary woman.

Bordelle creates a much darker appearance with a flower/spikes boarder around the slightly serif typeface. The border and logo is also in the middle of a black and gold zipper, which is a reference to the type of underwear which they sell, which is a lot more BDSM style than the other lingerie brands I have researched. This is definitely reflected in the logo, which is much less feminine and more gothic. This is something I should be careful with my own logo, not to make it look BDSM or reflect something that has nothing to do with the content of the book or Charlotte Shane herself.

Researching into these lingerie logos has been really useful to see a similar style of logo I am producing, especially the Love Stories Intimates, as it has a similar concept to what I am trying to achieve, so it was useful to see it finished and working, to help me make my logo work with the same concept.
