OUGD504 STUDIO BRIEF THREE - FRONT COVER EXPERIMENTS

Development was undertaken into the typeface on the front cover, as a typeface can change the whole feel of a cover, and it is very important not to portray a different message than is intended.

A more cursive typeface paired with a softer, more modern serif typeface creates quite a relaxed, feminine appearance.

This serif typeface in upper and lower case creates a more sophisticated appearance as serif typefaces are often associated with more formal events and publications. However due to the thin weight in some aspects of the typeface, it still manages to have quite an elegant appearance, without looking too outdated as well as this is a contemporary publication.

This is the same typeface as directly above only in opposite cases, and it has a completely different appearance, as the lower case is evidently more relaxed and feminine with rounded terminals in some cases, which look more dainty. The uppercase subtitle however looks much more bulky in the bottom with each letterform taking up a square amount, no variation in x-height.

A much more hand written style typeface, with a much lager x-height as well, creating an elongated appearance, which is a lot more creative and not as serious.

This typeface has a heavier stroke weight and wider kerning, creating a bulkier more spaced out appearance that looks slightly out of place.

In uppercase this typeface works slightly better as the letterforms are much more even, however I am unsure this typeface works due to the chunky stroke weight.

Experimenting with different typefaces for the front cover was really beneficial to the direction of this design, as ideas that were initially thought of as being forward leading don't work nearly as well, and other secondary ideas work much better than expected, such as the serif typefaces designs. The next step will be to refine the typeface choices and come to a key aesthetic choice.
