After thinking about our topic of research and conducting some initial research, I produced this slide which outlines the areas I'm researching, potential outcomes, and any questions I want answered.
Questions:
1. When you think of the Amazon deforestation, what comes to mind?
A. Killing trees, global warming, animal agriculture, destroying habitats, human greed, waste
2. Should I focus on one area of do overall research on all areas?
A. Research all then define. All because they all link and inform each other. All areas as tackling one won't solve such a huge issue. Research all areas and pick the most impactful, maybe pick something that isn't as well known eg. soya bean farms.
3. Preference on practical outcome...why?
A. Facts about deforestation. Posterzine using recycled materials. Maybe something where people directly experience or demonstrates the consequences of the issue, because it is not close to home and the effects don't feel so rapid, it's often ignored. Good to think about the outcomes medium/stock choice. Is the paper sustainable? Play with making your own papers?
4. What do you think of the outcome target market being children? Should research reflect target market...research things kids want to read about?
A. Best age to teach. Great idea to as children are the future so these lessons should be learned early. However, this issue needs to be taught now and adults are fairly ignorant to the facts as it won't affect them in their lifetime. Good to target children as they are the future generation, however I believe that it is something that needs to be addressed now so maybe address it at an older audience.
5. Tell me three words you'd use to describe the Amazon rainforest.
A. Dying, beautiful, green. Wet, decreasing, green. Colourful, vibrant, diverse. Beautiful, diverse, green, untouched.
6. Disregarding the outcomes I suggested, what would you produce...why?
A. Campaign to protect. Campaign is effective idea. A direct experience. Something that encourages the use of FSC papers/sustainable papers, maybe a collection of stocks that are sustainable.
7. Do you think it would be worth asking the public what they think of the deforestation of the Amazon, or irrelevant?
A. Yes. Relevant to find out how aware they are. Yes, find out why people ignore it. Useful as it is a good gauge how much people know already.
8. Anything else you'd suggest or comment?
A. Good start. Try and create something unique, don't use over imagery of trees as it has been done lots before.
This feedback has been really useful to me to see what people think of the topic as a whole and especially about the audience. I really wanted to produce a booklet for children to make them aware of the rainforest, however, as it was raised in my feedback the issue needs to be tackled now, not in a generations time when it could be too late. So perhaps I could produce a book series, one for kids, one for teenagers, one for adults, one for older people, to spread awareness across all ages, but with age specific content. These books could be accompanied by a poster campaign, or perhaps a different outcome for each age group, one that is specific for each age. These are all things to be considered after the research has been undertaken.
Next steps: I will carry on with my research, but identifying key areas and focusing on them now that I have a rough general understanding. This will help my research to become a lot more organised and will be easier to manage when producing the practical outcome.
