OUGD505 STUDIO BRIEF TWO - VEGETATION ILLUSTRATIONS

For another design idea for the front cover I went about drawing leaves and vegetation using some of the images found in the research as a basis for the shape and design of the leaves and plants.

Initial vegetation sketches using fine liners and green coloured sharpies and a white gel pen to add detail. Some of these have worked quite nicely such as the ones at the bottom, however the spikey ones look just like weeds. I don't think the sharpies work well in adding colour as they're too flat, there's no variation in shades which would occur in the actual plants.

I tried using watercolour instead, to create a more realistic effect, however the leaves I have done don't really look like the rainforest, except for the round on at the bottom. The spikey ones really don't work at all, they just look like angry weeds.

This experimentation with leaf drawing was really useful to see what style I would automatically draw leaves in as i'm not great with 'plant' and environment drawing. They didn't really have the impact and great aesthetic I was hoping they'd have, so now i'm unsure whether or not this is a good idea to pursue, and whether to just stick to the photograph front cover. I do however think this idea needs more development before I disregard it.
However I feel I am spending too much time deciding on and developing the front cover, so instead I'm going to focus on getting the content sorted first.
