OUGD403 DESIGN SKILLS BRIEF

I have been set my first Design Skills Brief, titled "Visual Thinking, Visual Communication".
There are several learning outcomes to this brief:

4A4 Demonstrate an awareness of practical and conceptual concerns within the context of visual thinking and visual communication.

4B3 Explore a range of approaches to the generation and investigation of ideas in the development of solutions to set problems.
4C3 Visually explore ideas through the selection of appropriate methods, processes and media in response to set briefs.
4C4 Demonstrate a practical investigation of visual thinking, visual research and visual development.
4D3 Document and record critical awareness, evaluation and self-reflection in response to their own work and the work of others.

This brief is divided into two parts, part one is titled "Alphabet Soup", and the second part is titled "Message and Delivery".
The first part, Alphabet Soup, is the brief I have been set, where the task is to respond to a series of tasks using letter forms as a starting point, that focus on the visual investigation of form, media and format. I have been given a theme, social, for which I have to manipulate Garamond, my chosen font out of Vignelli's 6 typefaces, to represent that theme. I have to come up with 10 different designs for this theme, experimenting with colour, tracing, line strengths, markings and more.

In the second part of the brief, Message and Delivery, I have to apply my existing and developing understanding of visual language, research and thinking to a set of brief led problems that focus on the visual communication of the message. I have to take one design from my 10 designs in part one, which will be chosen from critiques from peers, and develop it further in design and create a whole alphabet.

The deadline for this whole brief is 17th November 2014 at 2pm.
