Following my adaptations to my designs during Studio Brief 2 I presented them to a small group of peers and one of my tutors to get feedback on my designs, to help me choose one design that I will bring forward and design the whole alphabet in it.
Many comments were made on my designs, all of which have helped me in my decision. One of my peers commented that in Design Idea two, if I was to design the whole alphabet and make up a random word, all the letters could end up leaning the same way, which may not be as effective, as for my designs I just made up the word "social" and designed the letters so that the word looks aesthetically appealing. This may not be the case with all words however.
Others commented that they liked Design Idea three because it was simple, yet still reflected my theme social, whilst maintaining some of Garamond's more recognisable features. Design Idea ten was also a favourite amongst my peers because it is unusual and bold. Finally Design Idea one was a favourite too, because they thought the serifs put an interesting twist on my typeface, and the idea behind the design was also a clever one. They thought it was an interesting design that was still legible and could also still work as both body copy text and as title text too.
However my tutor suggested that Design Idea four and five, where I have made the letterforms out of cake, doesn't look so much like cake, especially in Design Idea five where the letterforms are flat black, they look like bones and skeletons instead, which is kind of sinister and not what I was aiming for at all, but I can definitely see the point my tutor was making, and I agree with it.
Following this critique I have chosen Design Idea one to continue developing, and create a whole alphabet with. I chose this design as I feel it keeps the style of Garamond the font it is based around, yet reflects my theme social really well, whilst still remaining legible and readable. I will create a grid that fits with this letterform that will help me with designing the rest of the alphabet. I will also create this design digitally as well using Illustrator, to give it a professional and finished look.
