OUGD404 DESIGN PRINCIPLES - STUDIO BRIEF 1 - TASK 2

Today we had to bring in cardboard boxes that we could use to construct a letterform out of. We got put into groups of about 7 or 8 and had to choose a typeface which we had to base our letterform on. We had to think about lighting and space when creating this letterform, so we couldn't just cut it straight out of a box and put it on the table and say we're done.

The typeface we chose was called Visitor, and used pixels to create the letterforms, which we thought could be quite interesting to create using cardboard. Playing with perspective we started with the intersection being the furthest point, and as you moved down the strokes, the cardboard squares came closer towards you, and also got bigger, enhancing the perspective. We also made the squares overlap so that it wasn't just dots placed in an "X" shape, but they touched so the "X" shape was more recognisable and was a more fluid shape. We attached each square on a piece of string to the top and bottom of two tables put on top of each other, and securing some of the more wobbly squares using magic tape to the table, so that the shape wouldn't alter and move so easily. We gave it an orange background so that the shape would be a lot easier to see, rather than against whatever was on the wall behind it. We also had a viewing box with a rectangle cut out of it for you to get the best view of our letterform.
To improve this we could of cross hatched each square on each stage of it moving out gradually becoming lighter and with less cross hatching to make it appear as if you are going into a tunnel, this could of made it look more 3D and give a better sense of light.
