OUGD405 STUDIO BRIEF 1 - MIND MAP

To start off this project I produced two mind maps of ideas, so give me lots of starting points of which I could develop upon.

This first mind map explores ideas such as Architecture, pillars and arched doorways and door knobs. Also foods or food equipment such as circular foods like eggs or cupcakes, also spoons or the dials on scales. I thought of book covers and the illustrations actually on CD's and DVD's, as some are really interesting. I also thought of nature, lakes, trees, flowers, and rivers. Finally I thought of roads, how they wind and weave, and road signs as well.

This mind map explores ideas such as magazine covers, iconic cover stars such as David Beckham for Elle, the first male cover they have ever had. I also thought of teddy bears heads, really close up so they look circular, as tatty teddies are really personal and unique in the way they have been worn, and photo frames are very personal things too. I considered the idea of balls, having different types of balls such as footballs or tennis balls. This lead me to thinking about different flavours of pot noodles, looking at them from above so you get the noodlyness rather than the label on the pot. I found a really interesting design in the book "The stuff you can't bottle: Advertising for the global youth market" by King Adz, where cereal boxes had been adapted to show the truth of their contents, for example with Frosties. I could do this same idea for many other things such as cakes, or create my own cereal box designs.

A lot of these ideas came from me just flicking through the book "The stuff you can't bottle: advertising for the global youth market" by King Adz, as there are some really inspirational things in there, and also some really simple designs produced using everyday objects that I thought could work really well for this project, such as the balls and pot noodle ideas.

These cereal box designs by Ron English were a real inspiration for me when it came to thinking of images I could put in my photo frames. I like the brutality of his designs, how the imagery all appears to be exactly the same as it would on the normal versions of these cereals, but when you look closer they're really telling you the truth about cereal. I think this is such a clever idea.
Next I will develop some of the key ideas I have generated from these mind maps and do some primary research, taking photographs of existing photo frames for example.
