OUGD406 STUDIO BRIEF 3 - INITIAL DESIGNS

After being allocated different aspects to produce, and deciding on continuing with the sphere design, which one of my peers pointed out was similar to The Flower of Life (shown below), which is sacred geometry and is the symbol for enlightenment through knowledge and understanding, which we thought related very well to the content of the exhibition, as it's all about theory books. We then produced our own outcomes, keeping with the white, black and grey blue colours, and Bebas Neue Regular as the typeface. We also chose "Re-Connect" as the name for our exhibition, as we were redesigning the covers of books, so we thought Re-Connect was more appropriate than Connect.

Flower of Enlightenment.

Signage:
This is the introductory sign before you walk into the exhibition, explaining a little bit about the exhibition.
I went for a simple design, constructed of three columns of information, starting with the most important on the left and finishing with the least important. I also think that the title of the exhibition helps to break up the complexity of the logo and the body text as well.

I tried the text in the middle, just to see how it would look, and I think this looks awful frankly, it just looks plonked there.
This is the same design only with a much smaller amount of body text, as I thought that before there was too much text, nobody is going to stand and read that much text before going into an exhibition, so I thought it'd be better to keep it short and simple instead.

I went for a different approach, only having half of the logo, and no text, as I thought this may intrigue people more to go and see the exhibition, not knowing exactly what it's about. The half circle also works much better, it fits nicer on the page, and doesn't look like it's floating anymore either.

I tried inserting a small section of text to the right of the main design, however I think this looks out of pace, just being plonked there to the side, especially when the circle, title and date are all centrally aligned to one another, and the body text is off to the side.

I added the text underneath the date, as I do think that some text is necessary, just to give a brief description about the exhibition, giving more information before you go into the exhibition. I think this works quite nicely, however it looks a bit odd sticking out to the sides more than anything else, and appearing like a board on top of the circle, and the date and title are balancing on it. This may just be because of the plain background colour however.

I tried it with the blue background and white everything else to give it more depth and to make the elements look less like they are floating in mid air. I quite like this although without the white it looks a little heavy.

This may look the same as the initial design, however the sphere is actually the same shade blue as the previous design, which on a small scale you can't really tell, but on a larger scale I think this will add an interesting and different touch.

I also experimented with black, which I surprisingly really like. It makes the rest of the design appear very bright and sparkly almost.

Name plaques:

These are my designs for name plaques, which I took the same partial sphere idea from the other aspects of my signage, to keep a continuous theme going. I tried the whole sphere pattern as well, acting more as a pattern rather than an object. I like this although it makes the text a bit hard to read. I tried the same white, black and blue colour combinations to see which works best, and I think I prefer the final design, in the bottom right corner the best, using the blue on the sphere to highlight it, but black tex on a white background to make everything stand out nicely. On two of the designs I tried a very pale grey background to make it look a bit more full, however I don't think I need this, it just makes the whole design look a little dull.
