The ways in which typography is utilised changes from place-to-place and varies greatly in effectiveness, style, communication and aesthetic. Graphic Designers, through training, are acutely sensitive the ways in which type is used and abused in the real world. Although typography in context rarely meets our expectation, this variety only serves to make the world more interesting and diverse.
In OUGD504 Studio Brief 3 you will be producing a publication that celebrates the richness and diversity of type as it is to a specific place.
Brief
Your task is to collect and organise photographic and copy content that will be used in a publication entitled “A-Z: Type in context”. Your publication will explore the typography specific to a particular place. Which place you look at is entirely your choice – it could be home, abroad or here in Leeds.
You must collect at least 26 photographs – at least one per letter. These can be from road signs, shop windows, newspapers, placards, etc. For each one that you collect you must write a short passage about the context in which it was taken – where is it used and for what purpose? Is it effective? Is it easy to read? Does it communicate well?
Mandatory Requirements
Photographs: The photographs should be taken to a reasonable standard however, we are aware that there will be restriction based on access to cameras. Good photos can be achieved using phone cameras but do ensure that they are taken using the highest resolution possible.
Copy: Your copy should be written using formal language therefore it should be written in the third person consistently.
Deliverables
You will collate your findings into a 5-10 minute presentation. Please ensure that your photographs and copy is saved and backed up as they will be used and submitted for OUGD504.
My Understanding of the Brief
I must gather photographic content from a specific place, or even my journey from one place to another, ensuring I have at least one photograph from each letter in the alphabet. These letters can be photographs of shop signs, posters, billboards, road signs etc. Accompanying these photographed I need to write a short passage for each letter explaining it's context, where I found it, and analyse it's use within the place it was found, why it's been used, what effect it has etc. These findings should be complied into a 5-10 minute presentation, and will form the basis of another brief during this module, so it is important that this is done extensively and thoroughly.
