OUGD504 STUDIO BRIEF FOUR - ISLAND RESEARCH

Bear's Den featured in a musical documentary called "Austin to Boston", produced by their record label Communion Records, alongside fellow artists Be Howard, The Staves and Nathaniel Rateliff. Directed by Marcus Haney, the documentary follows their adventures as they travel 3000 miles across America in a VW Camper van.
It would be really useful to watch this documentary to see how they rect to different places, as this could influence the kind of islands to choose, which parts of America they prefer, as the climate varies massively.

In a live Q & A a fan asked where there favourite touring destinations are, this was their response:
- Kev really likes San Fransisco, CA - the setting, the vibe and the architecture.
- Davie really likes Hobarth, Tasmania - the coffee, the people and the harbour.
- I really like New York, NY (original, I know) - there is an infectious energy in the city, we always have very good nights there and bagels. (Joey)
This is interesting to take into consideration, as although these are places they tour the reasons they prefer these places aren't because of the atmosphere during shows, but the architecture, the bagels and harbour as well, so this is definitely something to take into consideration when defining which islands to look into.

A question was asked about how they felt touring in the Scottish Highlands, this was their answer:
-Touring the Scottish Highlands was amazing, incredible scenery, beatific beverages and Scottish legends. We really love it when we get to go off the beaten path (as it were) and play places that a lot of bands don't get to visit. People often listen in a different way in those places, and they really appreciate bands and artists who make the effort to go the extra mile (literally).
- This is really useful to know, that they prefer places off the beaten track, places with incredible scenery, doing things that other bands haven't done before. This shows that perhaps islands that are more unusual, perhaps inhabited with a lot of greenery is more the direction to go down with islands, perhaps some islands off the coast of northern Scotland, or Norway even, however it would be more appropriate if it was Scotland as they're from London and it is part of the UK.

In an interview with The Line of Best Fit, a question was asked as to where the name of the band came up from, this was their answer:
We were trying to go for something like a Where the Wild Things Are hideaway kind of place where a kid runs off to, and for us, there’s quite a lot of perspective from an younger person to an older person and a lot of storytelling in our music. It just made sense to us.
- This matches with the previous comments they've made about liking places off the beaten track, they're very interested in the outdoors and running away, adventures and stories, all of this finding things out and exploring their imagination and new places. This can all translate into what kind of place the band is more relatable to, at the moment it sounds like something off the beaten track, perhaps where fishermen went to fish, somewhere with a lot of history and mysterious stories. The Scottish islands are sounding like the most perfect place that fits this description.

The setting for the filming of the music video for Bear's Den's track "Agape" was filed on Bantham Beach in Devon, according to an interview with the director of the music video on Promo News which is perhaps closer to home, yet just the right distance to run away to, completely different to their hometown of London. This is perhaps a different angle to go down rather than the Scottish Islands, as it is more in touch with London and the modern way of living, however is still a get away, somewhere people go to on holiday, to escape their normal lives. This is perhaps something to think about as an option for the islands, perhaps imaginary islands could be constructed off the Devon coastline, an imaginary world.

Google mapping Bantham Beach in Devon, it was found that there are no islands nearby really, as you can see from the photograph below. There are however lovely estuaries going into the sea, creating a really interesting aesthetic, however not island like at all.

Looking for more islands in the UK proved difficult, as unusually there aren't actually that many clusters of islands in the UK, just the odd one here and there mainly.

This island is off the southern coast of Wales, nearby Swansea, and is made up of several different islands as you can see, which means there are enough islands for one to appear each week without having to add any really. However the main part of the island is really quite large compared to the other bits, although it looks as though it's several different islands is just one big one, which would be good if it was broken up.

These smaller islands you can just see off the coast of Wales, along with the island Ramsey could also be a possibility, however the smaller islands are spaced quite far away, so wouldn't work very well aesthetically, would have to be moved further together. However it is better that there are very separate islands, rather than one larger one and a few little ones like above.

Islands on the map for the above islands.

These islands here off the coast of Anglesey are pretty much exactly what is looking for. Scattered islands that are all a relative size.

This is another group of islands off the coast of Anglesey, just above the previous bunch which are a bit more irregular, making them look slightly more natural as well.

Map view for the above two sets of islands.

These islands off the north coast of Scotland look the right shape, however they are really just a few larger islands that look like lots of smaller ones. However there are quite a lot of smaller islands around the larger ones, although these are a bit smaller than is ideal.

Researching into different islands has been useful as it has shown me that there is never going to be a perfect island out there, at least in the UK anyway, so perhaps creating my own imaginary island would be the best idea to create the right aesthetic. This also fits in with the idea of running away, exploring new places, creating there own places of freedom. The next stage will be to start producing some of these islands, creating my own as well in different mediums to see what is most effective.
