The page layout sketches were used to create digital designs, using the actual photographs that will be used in the book, to ensure accurate sizes are achieved.
These are digital page layouts for the introduction page, all of which correspond to one of the hand drawn sketches. The photograph was the influence for the size of each page, as depending on what the layout was, the pages had to be a different size to accommodate the photograph effectively. This resulted in quite a drastic difference in some of the page sizes. The leaf pattern ideas were also experimented with, and the block pattern works really nicely, allowing the circle and text to stand out, however the random branching out leaves look awkward and forced, not natural and flowing at all, which is a shame as these were effective looking designs in the sketches. |
As a result of these digital design experiments, more layouts were experimented with, and then applied to a set size of page 80x130mm, as making the page size so that the photograph fits without cropping it has resulted in too varied and extreme page sizes.
These layouts on the new page size were then experimented with with different photographs that will actually become a part of the final book, to get a real idea of how it will looks.

This is the same as a previous layout, however on this new size the photograph fits a lot better within the page, it fills it better. |
The text box surrounded by a full bleed photograph makes this layout look a bit odd, as the text box looks slightly out of place. |
This layout is very effective, with great, tall long lines being created, something that is aiming to be achieved throughout to reflect trees. The text box outside of the photograph works a lot better as well, as if it has it's own place. |
This circle idea follows other design possibilities for other pages, however similar to the rectangle from previous, it does look like it's been plonked on top of the photograph. |
Placing the text box still on top of the photograph but right on the edge, so there is no photographic border, in an attempt to have a full bleed photograph but still include a text box. This does work slightly better, however it kind of looks as if it is cutting away at the photograph. |
This is the same as the first layout only with the text and photograph swapped round. This also works effectively, and puts more emphasis on the text being at the top, which is something to consider. |
This is very similar to a previous layout, only there is a margin of space above the photograph, which makes the whole page look very neat and tidy. |
These experiments have been very useful to determine what works and what doesn't, on a variety of different page sizes as well. The next step will be to choose two layouts, which the chosen two will be shown below, and replicate this with the whole of the photographs, to see how the book will look with these layouts, whether they are effective on mass.
These two were the final chosen page layouts, as they were of a very similar kind of layout, but also created different space within the page, and allows for different photographs to be shown off differently, as each photograph will lend itself to one or the other, being shown off in the best way.
