OUGD504 STUDIO BRIEF THREE - LEAF PATTERN

To reflect nature within the design of the book more clearly, leaf patterns came to mind, as this is something very common in nature, and is easy to create a simple vector pattern with as well. This could add a bit more interest into the design of the book as well, to make it look less minimalist.

This is the leaf that was used for drawing the three little leaves below it. Drawing three leaves helps to create a slightly more unique pattern, as it'll be copying three leaves instead of one. To make it more unique, drawing three completely different leaves three times would of been a good idea, however just to test it out only one was used.

Here the process of creating these leaves digitally is shown. Using the sketch as a template, it was traced over using the pen tool to create precise, sleek lines that could be easily manipulated and changed. The leaf was produced in black and white lines and also in colour as well, to widen the options. Including the veins as well gave it a bit more detail, so it didn't look too minimalist and vectorised, like an icon.

The three different leaf drawings were created digitally in three different colours as well to distinguish easily between the three.

Using these illustrations a pattern was created by copying the leaves over several time. It was created in outline, colour, outline with the veins filled in black, and then more minimally the silhouette in colour, outline colour and black outline, as the more detail illustrations as patterns were looking a bit too complicated, especially when produced on a small scale as they will be.
These patterns have turned out really nicely, especially the more simplistic ones, as the added detail of the veins makes such a small illustration a bit too complicated, especially when used with a pattern as well. Different variations of these patterns will next be applied to the book in different pages throughout, to experiment with it's application and uses.
