OUGD505 STUDIO BRIEF TWO - FOLD/BIND & FEEDBACK

After talking to my peers about how to address making importing wood laws tighter, they suggested to make it aimed at the people who import the wood themselves, so companies that buy wood, as they will be the ones choosing the wood to import not the government, and they can help not by the laws changing but by choosing more sustainable, legal wood. This is a great idea and gets around the issue with addressing it to the government in relation to laws.

I then experimented with a hot dog fold, as it is cheap and simple to produce, and allows for a poster on the back which would be great for people to put up on their walls or in shop windows to show they support sustainability.

I created a little mock up to see if all the content I want to put in the guide will fit into a hot dog fold with the limited amount of pages.

Mock up:

It starts off with the front cover, then a double spread of the effects of deforestation, then how to know your wood is legally and sustainably sourced, then two pages of tips and tricks to being more sustainable, and then charities/NGO's that promote saving the rainforest that they can support, and finally the back cover.

These are all the things that I wanted to include in the guide, and it's great to know I can fit them in using the hot dog fold. However, with a fold, it can sometimes be hard to line the pages up and it's a lot easier to look messy rather than a having it like a book and staple or saddle stitch bound. And the use of a regular book and bind instead of hot dog fold is that the companies can have the poster up to show their support, but also be able to refer back to the guide as well, which wouldn't be possible in the hot dog fold, it's one or the other.
This is some important reflection deciding on the fold or bind, as it will decide what size or structure the guide document has to be on InDesign.

The guide will now be produced for companies who import wood to inform them of how to know it's sustainable and what they can do in their everyday lives to be more environmentally friendly. It will be produced in a book format with either saddle stitch or staple bound, although I need to find out which is more environmentally friendly. It will be printed on recycled or sustainably sourced paper.
