OUGD403 STUDIO BRIEF 2 - TYPE FOUNDRIES PREPARATION RESEARCH

Prior to my brief being given to me I did a bit of research into type foundries to support the work in the previous weeks task on Massimo Vignelli's typefaces.
I found quite a few, interesting type foundries, mostly with the help of http://type-foundries-archive.com/
One of the most unusual type foundries I found was http://PizzaDude.dk which was full of bold, brightly coloured fonts that looked more like illustrations than designed by the Swiss master typographers. However I love brightly coloured, bold type, so this type foundry was a great find for me. Pizza Dude is a Dutch type foundry, where one man, Jakob Fischer, designs both the typefaces and the website.
Cape Arcona http://www.cape-arcona.com/ is another interesting type foundry I found, which is host to both modern, unusual sans serif fonts, and more traditional serif fonts. Cape Arcona features fonts which could be used in everyday advertising or branding, contrary to Pizza Dude, which would perhaps be better suited to book covers possibly, due to their complex, colourful nature.
Other type foundries I found were TypoFonderie, Font You, Type Republic and Swiss Typefaces, all of which have merit and their own unique qualities.
I feel this research into type foundries has helped me to understand the great amount of typefaces there are, and how vastly they vary. It has also taught me that type foundries tend to stick to a theme of typefaces, rather than showcasing every typeface under the sun. This helps to give them a branding identity, which is very important for any design business.
